AHU with ALH Electronics

From Vanagon Diesel Information
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Overview

This page covers what is needed to migrate the ALH Electronics (harness & ECU) to the 1.9 1z/AHU engine.

Whys

There are a few who would ask "Why?" would you move over the ALH electronics to the AHU?

If you are using a 50deg OG diesel vanagon mounting and sump setup, an AHU is easier to install than an ALH with adaptors or fabricated parts.

However, an ALH has superior ECU, IP dynamics, and overall electronics than the AHU. Another HUGE benefit is an ALH is already setup to run a VNT turbo, where an AHU requires way more effort.

So, at the benefit of getting 80% of the benefits of an ALH on an AHU, if one migrates the electronics over, it gives you a slightly better setup than a stock AHU.

Hows

You can wire the AHU into the ALH harness. But the snout is bigger on ALH, timing adjustment is way different. Mounting pump is just the three bolts threading into the pump from the snout then the fourth bolt. No extra pieces

Harness Modifications

This will cover what's needed on the harness side.

Injection Pumps

Overview

The AHU and ALH have different injection pumps; very similar though.

However, since our vans are bricks, and we should be thinking of "best methods" when doing an initial setup. I would advise if going through the aspect of migrating to an ALH harness, you should get an IP from an ALH as well.

But not ANY Injection Pump, get one from an automatic transmission, as they had 11mm IP's whereas the manual-transmissions had 10mm IPs. More power possabilities isn't a bad idea with a brick.
